While undoubtedly challenging and unforgiving, XCOM: Enemy Unkown streamlined and simplified many of the elements present in the ‘classic’ games. Ostensibly, it was more of the same, just done better. It managed to build on the deep strategic mechanics the original ‘reboot’ developed, by cutting out exploits (jet pack snipers and Overwatch spamming), expanding the class abilities and map diversity/complexity. XCOM 2 was comfortably one of the best games of 2016.
